Hot Topic is known amongst artist groups as one of the worst offenders of art theft in U.S. retailers. I know artists are important to What Pumpkin, and I’d imagine multiple cases of art theft would be a very big deal. The most well-known of the cases were stolen fan art from independent artists, which is the same demographic the Design Contest was aimed to. I’m an artist myself and I wouldn’t want to support a store that steals from my peers.
The people running Hot Topic have zero respect to artists and to copyright law. They’ve been ripping-off independent artists’ storefronts, and continue do so. The whole company really should have been shut down long ago.
If you support artists, independent, fan artist, or any kind, you should oppose Hot Topic and MSPA’s association with them!
Tell What Pumpkin to kick Hot Topic out of the Design contest RIGHT NOW.
We have so little time left to stop this please tell them that it is completely unacceptable to do any sort of business with petty art thieves.
Even if you don’t know what to say, or if you think it would compromise the contestants; It won’t. Just please voice your thoughts in anyway you can put them. Don’t let Hot Topic get a dime out of Homestuck.
WHY DOES THIS ONLY HAVE TWELVE NOTES GUYS GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER AND GET ON THIS NOW
Guys- before hopping onto every little thing you see- look into it first!!
This OP is biased in information by leaving out key parts!! Especially about this contest. Please do further research and click the links that were listed as well.
ANDREW HUSSIE: Creator of Homestuck.
WHAT PUMPKIN: A serious and legit place for Homestuck goods. There is no pumpkin, but there are great finery and items to be found.
HOT TOPIC: A cool music-inspired, underground cartoons, cult movie, comic book scenes, and other pop icon accessory and apparel store for both guys and girls.
I’ve noticed lately that whenever something Homestuck related happens, a HUGE deal is made about it (like the incident on Gaia for example) Yes art theft is bad, but instead of trying to cause a huge ruckus, contact the owner and the “art thief” to try and resolve the issue. If Issue doesn’t get resolved, then you may spread word in a neutral, non-biased way. Not everything you see is art theft! In fact a lot of times it can be collaborations or permission from the artist. We wouldn’t know until you ASK the original artist.
That is all, just needed to rant. Especially when it seems that this uproar is all linking back and quoting this OP completely instead of linking to other sources or searching on their own a bit. It wouldn’t bother me as much if people would just use more than one source and backed it up. (I’m referring to everyone else now- OPer did a good job linking more sources in the text section, I just believe that many people overlooked that and just took it for as is)
Also…try reading this part again..
Hot Topic’s Pick (1): Hot Topic’s choice from among the designs will receive $250 cash for the artist, and their design will be available exclusively in Hot Topic Stores.
Thus meaning the chosen one by HT will get their design on merchandise- that is the whole point of this contest is to get YOUR DESIGN ON MERCHANDISE. So the only way for that to be art theft is if the chosen design was stolen from another artist. NOT HotTopic’s fault.
Otherwise this is already the artist’s consent top have their work sold.
I keep editing this post- Here is another thing to keep in mind..
"Please remember, its not usually HT being evil, its artists they freelance or contract that are lazy and submit cheats as work."
